Two, Introductions about Previous CHTF
CHTF 1999
1999 is a mile stone for Chinese hi-tech development. In August, 1999, the CPC central committee and the state council held the convention of national technological innovation, in which, a decision about enhancing technological innovation, developing high science and technology and realizing their industrialization was made. The direct result of this convention was the holding of the first CHTF in Shenzhen city from 5th to 10th, Oct, 1999. After that, Chinese hi-tech achievements’ industrialization had a place for tranformation.
At CHTF 1999, Zhong Rongji, Prime Minister of P.R.C. came to the spot and said ”In order to promote the economic and technological cooperation between China and the other countries in the world, the Chinese Government decides to hold CHTF each year in Shenzhen”. The first CHTF was jointly hosted by Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation of P.R.C., Ministry of Science and Technology of the P.R.C, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the P.R.C, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government at the new Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center, which was comprised of three parts: the commercialization of hi-tech achievements, hi-tech forum and the display of hi-tech products with the theme of “international computer, telecommunication and network products”.
CHTF 1999 combined the commercialization of hi-tech achievements with specialized show organically when highlighting the former. Meanwhile, it creatively brought into full play government and intermediary in the commercialization of hi-tech achievements and projects and made a meaningful try in exploring the new-type commercialization mechanism by first proposing the commercialization mode of “the combination of commercialization of achievements and venture investment”. CHTF 1999 not only presented thousands of high-level projects at the exhibition but also invited domestic and foreign enterprises in needs of technologies, venture investment institutions and intermediaries. For the latter two, specialized shows were organized. The online commercialization system for technology suppliers and buyers was established for the purpose of realizing the “all-year-round” CHTF, which created conditions for the scientific and technological achievements into productivity and produced many great results. Hi-tech forum was also became one of the top forums in China’s hi-tech field.
General data: 20,200 square meters of exhibition area, 2,856 enterprises, 4,150 projects, 955 investors, 5 foreign government delegations, 86 delegations from 26 countries and regions, 32 international corporations, 31 Chinese provinces, autonomous prefectures and municipalities as well as Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, 22 famous universities, 4 state ministries (academies), over 30 top rank speakers and USD 6.494 billion of trading volume.
CHTF 2000
The first CHTF was so successful that it attracted many attentions at home and abroad. Therefore, a large number of visitors and customers came to participate in CHTF 2000 with soaring enthusiasm. For satisfying the demands of more exhibitors, the capacity of Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center was expanded, which made the scale of the second CHTF bigger than the first one. At the same time, the internationalization and professionalization of CHTF were also improved rapidly with which its functions in promoting the industrialization and commercialization of hi-tech achievements were able to work better.
The second CHTF was held from 11th to 17th, Oct. 2000 at the new center and Wu Bangguo, Vice Prime Minister of State Council attended the opening ceremony by delivering a speech. It was made up of the exhibition and commercialization of hi-tech achievements, specialized show and hi-tech forum. Besides IT exhibition, newly-added “biological technology specialized show” and “new material specialized show” attracted more international corporations.
CHTF 2000 further accentuated the commercialization of hi-tech achievements, making more active exploration in the commercialization methods and modes, such as holding auction of hi-tech achievements and match-making talks on projects, establishing “hi-tech property right exchange” and setting up the online commercialization system. Those actions made daily projects collecting, appraising, packaging and matching be the compensations of displaying, transacting and negotiating during the fair. Therefore, the commercialization mechanism of combining the “end” and “endlessness” of CHTF was more complete. The active venture investors were still the shinning spot of CHTF 2000, thus, CHTF further enhanced the intermediary services of investment and capital raising by establishing the union of hi-tech industry and venture investment. In order to regulate the latter investing in the former, Shenzhen city issued the Provisional Regulations on Venture Capital Investing in Hi-tech Industry, which was the first regulation from government for regulating investment behavior. At the second CHTF, many overseas students participated in the fair and found CHTF was a convenient channel for pursuing their own careers in China.
General data: 36 thousand square meters for exhibition, 2,968 enterprises, 15 thousands projects, 13 hundreds investors, 9 foreign government delegations, 86 delegations from 33 countries, 44 international corporations, 31 Chinese provinces, autonomous prefectures and municipalities, 5 cities with separate national economic and social development planning as well as Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, 26 famous universities, 6 state ministries (academies), over 30 top rank speakers and USD 8.54 billion of trading volume.
CHTF 2001
The successes of the last two CHTF injected a strong strength into China’s economic growth and the adjustment of industrial structure. The recession of the world’s economy brought negative effect to China’s international trade and export. However, the export of China’s hi-tech products was booming, which effectively stimulated the growth of the international trade. The success of CHTF 2001 played an important role in further increasing the export of China’s hi-tech products, optimizing the structures of commodities and industry and stimulating economic growth.
CHTF 2001was held from 12th to 17th, Oct, 2001 at Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center and Shenzhen Civic Center. Wu Yi, State Councilor attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. This time, the National Development and Reform Commission became one of the hosts and the Ministry of Agriculture and Chinese Academy of Engineering were the co-organizers, which made CHTF stronger in organizing, bigger in scale and more prominent in theme. Besides the original three grand shows, it added the show of hi-tech agricultural technologies and products.
Based on the successes of last two fairs, CHTF 2001 continued to perfect the modes of commercializing achievements: created the negotiation of investment in newly-started enterprises and explored actively a new coordinated mode for establishing a business, which was “CHTF—the Commercialization of Technological Property Right—Growth Enterprises Market”, with a purpose of establishing a new-type capital market centering on the commercialization of technological property rights and investment in new enterprises, and constructing the commercialization system that is suited to China’s national conditions and has Chinese characteristics. Meanwhile, CHTF combined its advantages with science and technology, talents and information resources in all provinces and expanded itself at time and space by holding paired talks in Beijing and Hubei in April and June.
For the convenience of exhibitors’ arranging their participation, the organizing committee decided to fix the holding time of CHTF to be every year’s October from 12th to 17th.
General data: 50 thousand square meters for exhibition, 3,320 enterprises, 15,404 thousands projects, 1,661 hundreds investors, 11 foreign government delegations, 85 delegations from 37 countries, 41 international corporations, 31 Chinese provinces, autonomous prefectures and municipalities, 4 cities with separate national economic and social development planning as well as Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, 30 famous universities, 7 state ministries (academies), over 60 top rank speakers and USD 10.418 billion of trading volume. According to the survey of Up-Point Consulting Company, the professional audiences accounted for 41.87% at CHTF 2001.
CHTF 2002
CHTF 2002 was held right after China’s entry into WTO, which brought both opportunities and challenges. How to help Chinese hi-tech enterprises improve their competitiveness in the world, how to further combine CHTF with the export of Chinese hi-tech products and how to make CHTF play more important role in the economic growth and the adjustment of industrial structure, CHTF 2002 gave its answers in its own way.
CHTF 2002 was held from 12th to 17th, Oct at Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center and Shenzhen Civic Center. Zhou Guangzhao, Vice-Chairman of Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. CHTF 2002 continued the contents of its predecessors but added the consultation and negotiation activities on Chinese enterprises listing at abroad, which attracted lots of international stock exchanges from over 10 countries and regions such as NASDAQ, Singapore, London and Tokyo. Thus, CHTF has created the “products” of different ladders from “Paired talks of hi-tech project” to “talks of newly-started investment” to “consultation and talks of Chinese enterprises listing at abroad” to satisfy the needs of the commercialization of hi-tech achievements in its different phases. The “super-SUPER” special events were also first began from this fair, whose menu-style services enhanced the exchange and cooperation between provinces, cities, academies, institutions, enterprises and their overseas counterparts, and also increased the hi-tech commercialization and investment introduction. The series activities for overseas students offered them a face-to-face chance with capital and built a bridge for them to start their own career with their hi-tech projects at homeland.
General data: 50 thousand square meters for exhibition, 3,691 enterprises, 7,749 thousands projects, 1,124 hundreds investors, 17 foreign government delegations, 88 delegations from 40 countries, 42 international corporations, 30 Chinese provinces, autonomous prefectures and municipalities, 4 cities with separate national economic and social development planning as well as Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, 27 famous universities, 7 state ministries (academies), 62 top rank speakers, 6 academicians from Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering and USD 12.16 billion of trading volume.
CHTF 2003
In face of the negative influence of SARS, CHTF 2003 still achieved a big success in creating a safer and more comfortable environment for exhibition and more suitable atmosphere for negotiation, communication and cooperation with the principle of grand, ardent, pragmatic and succinct. It had a memorial significance of periodicity and became a big shinning spot among the national convention and exhibition industry in 2003. Wu Yi, Vice Prime Minister of the State Council, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. CHTF 2003 was comprised of 5 parts: “Commercialization of Hi-Tech Achievements”, “Specialized Show”, “China Hi-Tech Forum”, “super-SUPER Special Events” and “A Year-round Fair”. For celebrating the 5th anniversary of CHTF, CHTF 2003 held “the Exhibition of Excellent Commercialization Projects at Previous CHTF” to retrospect and conclude the accomplishments and experiences that CHTF harvested in the commercialization, industrialization and internationalization of hi-tech achievements. At the ministerial forum, four ministers of science and technology from China, Egypt, British and Russia jointly signed Shenzhen Declaration. Super-SUPER special events were refined into “menu-style” service at this CHTF, becoming its unique service brand. At the activity of “the interactive dialogue between CEOs from China and U.S.A”, dozens of CEOs talked face to face, which was the first time in China.
