1. Maiden test flight of new drone a success

China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp (CASIC), a leading defense contractor, conducted the maiden test flight of what it called one of the country's best unmanned strike aircraft on Jan 11.

The WJ-700 is the first and only high-altitude, high-speed, long-endurance combat/reconnaissance drone in China, according to CASIC, adding that there is only a very small group of similar products in the international market. It has a maximum takeoff weight of 3.5 metric tons and is able to stay airborne for as long as 20 hours.

2. New T cell discoveries published

New T cell discoveries by the Huang Bo team from the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences (IBMS) of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS) were recently published in the Nature Immunology journal.

It was found that the cytokine interleukin-2 (IL-2), once thought to be a key signal for T cells to proliferate and grow, can also make T cells feel tired if it is present at the wrong time.

Further studies have shown that blocking the production of IL-2 at the right time could turn immune T cells into "cybertron warriors".

3. Record-setting subsea tunnel completed

The subsea tunnel between the Dalian Railway Station Stop and the Suoyu Bay South Stop of the Subway Line 5 was completed successfully on Jan 11, following the application of a shield tunneling machine independently developed by China Railway Engineering Equipment Group Co Ltd.

The project signifies that China has successfully overcome the "worldwide problem" of getting through sea karst geology in the shield zone.

4. Chinese scientists make progress in polysaccharide vaccine

Chinese scientists recently made fresh progress in polysaccharide vaccine research. They have developed an oral polysaccharide vaccine for the prevention of streptococcus pneumoniae infection.

According to Roy Curtiss, a member of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States, this research is a breakthrough in the traditional construction of bacterial polysaccharide vaccines, and can also be applied to polysaccharide vaccines and protein vaccines for other pathogenic bacteria, contributing to the rapid and efficient construction of vaccines and improving the ability to prevent sudden infectious diseases.

5. World's first batch of high temperature gas cooled reactor nuclear fuel elements starts shipment

The first batch of products from the world's first industrial-scale high temperature gas cooled reactor nuclear fuel elements production line was shipped from China North Nuclear Fuel Co Ltd, a subsidiary of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), on Jan 9.

They will provide fuel power for the subsequent grid connection of the Shidaowan high temperature gas cooled reactor nuclear power plant in Rongcheng, Shandong province.

This is an important step forward in the application of fourth-generation nuclear power technology in China, and indicates that China has the ability to sustainably provide high-quality high temperature gas cooled reactor spherical nuclear fuel elements for power plants.
