1. Homemade UAV restores communications for flood-hit areas

China's homemade emergency disaster relief unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) Wing Loong-2H has restored communications in Mihe town, Central China's Henan province, which was recently swamped with heavy rains and flooding.

The UAV was dispatched by the Ministry of Emergency Management on July 21. Equipped with a mobile public network base station, it achieved the stable and continuous mobile phone signal coverage for over a range of about 50 square kilometers.

2. Flexible 32-bit microprocessor debuts

British scientists have created a flexible 32-bit microprocessor that combines metal oxide thin film transistors and flexible polyimides, according to a recent article published in the British journal Nature on July 21.

The device will be a boost for the development of low-cost, fully flexible intelligent integrated systems.

3. Chinese researchers make breakthrough in carbon capture

Researchers from Nanjing Tech University recently formed a ferro-containing heteroatomic mordenite molecular sieve single material that's comprised of a unique structure, and can be used directly as a self-forming physical adsorbent without any post-treatment.

The material has shown to contain the highest carbon dioxide volume adsorption capacity and separation efficiency so far of its kind, with excellent water vapor resistance as well as good molecular sieve separation ability for argon, nitrogen and methane. It can achieve efficient absorption and separation of carbon dioxide in combustion, biogas and natural gas purification.

4. China launches world's largest carbon market

On July 16, China inaugurated its national carbon market, a landmark establishment that experts said will not only help accelerate the reduction in domestic carbon emissions, but also promote a broader global response to climate change.

The market currently includes over 2,000 companies in the power generation sector and monitors over 4.5 billion tons of carbon dioxide a year. It replaces the European Union's carbon trading program as the world's largest, according to the Ministry of Ecology and Environment.

In the future, the market will be extended to include another seven major carbon-emitting industries, including steel, chemicals and papermaking.

5. New vaccine designed for Zika virus

Scientists at the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Microbiology recently designed a new Zika vaccine based on structural biology.

It not only prevents the Zika virus from attacking the fetus, bus also cuts off the severe antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE) effect of Zika prestored antibodies against dengue virus infection.
